The 2021 Madrid Open champion, Alexander Zverev, is on course to defend his title as the German defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime with ease.
After losing 4 consecutive sets at the last two clay-court tournaments and losing the fifth at the 2022 Madrid Open, it looked like Zverev would not defend his points and face a major drop in the ATP Rankings.
However, since losing the first set to Marin Cilic in the second round, he won all the sets that he played in the Spanish capital and set up a semi-final clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Although he managed to win a lot of big trophies, Zverev still misses a Grand Slam trophy in his collection and recently expressed that he was "not happy with the status he currently has as a tennis player."
However, he might add another big title at the 2022 Madrid Open after cruising past Auger-Aliassime. It was not a good match for the young Canadian, who didn't have a single break point in the first set and was broken twice, which resulted in a swift 6-3 win for Zverev in the first set.
In the second set, the German player continued to pressure his opponent when he converted the third break point he had in the match. However, after failing to convert four break points in the sixth game, Zverev lost his serve in the following game.
He then stepped up his level again to eventually win the match 6-3, 7-5, and set up a semi-final match with his rival Tsitsipas. The Greek holds a positive 7-3 H2H record against Zverev, however, the German triumphed twice in the last four matches.
On the other hand, he lost in all three matches that very played on clay, and most recently at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters where Tsitsipas triumphed comfortably in two sets.
