While it seems that the come back of Alexander Zverev is being postponed, his very good friend, Dominic Thiem elected not to compete in Cincinnati this year.

Last year, the Austrian also skipped the ATP 1000 event in Cincinnati and so it will be second year in a row without Dominic Thiem in Cincinnati. On the other hand, Alexander Zverev is the defending champion and so he will lose also 1000 points that he earned last year.

In 2020, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev played in the US Open final and it was the Austrian who lifted his first Grand Slam title. This year, their final meeting in the Flushing Meadows is not very probable.

Dominic Thiem already played a few clay-court events in Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel and he showed some good tennis when he was able to comfortably win matches again. However, it seems that he's not yet ready for the hard-court part of the season.

On the other hand, Alexander Zverev started practicing just a couple of days ago. But after the horrible injury that he sustained at this year's Roland Garros, the world number 2 will need a bit more time to recover.
