After some rumors and speculations, it’s finally confirmed that the Roland Garros tennis complex will host the tennis event for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
As it’s been known for a very long time, Paris will be the host city of the 2024 Summer Olympics. When that was announced, many tennis fans rightly assumed that Roland Garros would be hosting the tennis part of the Olympics.
It made perfect sense because it’s a large enough complex to do so. Bercy doesn’t have as many courts, and indoor tennis doesn’t really fit with the vibe that the Summer Olympics are supposed to represent.
Although it was highly rumored for many months and almost confirmed, the official confirmation that the complex would indeed host the Summer Olympics didn’t come until now.
The official confirmation came from the social media pages of the Olympics with even the date now confirmed. The tennis part of the Olympics will run from July 27th until August 4th, 2024.
It will be hosted at the venue where every year the French Open event is held, which is very good news for a number of players. The courts won’t be converted from clay to hard but will remain the red dirt.
Olympic tennis is generally played on hard courts, but as the 2012 edition showed, it can be played on other surfaces as well. That year, it was played at Wimbledon, and it was on grass.
In 2024, it will be on clay and in Paris, so Rafael Nadal will certainly be a fan of that choice. Novak Djokovic probably won’t hate it either, as well as many other clay specialists.
The defending champions will be Alexander Zverev, who has played extremely well at the event in recent times, as well as Belinda Bencic, who surprisingly won gold in Tokyo last year.
