Alcaraz Declares Rival Sinner 'Best Player In The World' Ahead Of Madrid Open

by Zachary Wimer

Carlos Alcaraz joined Novak Djokovic in declaring Jannik Sinner the best player in the world ahead of the 2024 Madrid Open.

The 22-year-old Italian has been the best-performing player on the ATP Tour this year. Nobody has been as consistent and as great as Sinner, who has three trophies to his name and only two losses.

One of those came against Alcaraz, who had to work very hard to get the win. Sinner has been spectacular, and many of his contemporaries have recognized that. Recently, Djokovic called the Italian the best player in the world, and Alcaraz has joined in ahead of the Madrid Open.

When asked about Sinner, Alcaraz described him as the best player in the world right now, showing the respect for his fellow young rival, who he may play only in the final in Madrid.

"He’s dangerous. He’s the best player in the world right now. I think [some people] think his tennis doesn’t suit well to the clay, but he has had results on clay as well."

Not many expect Sinner to really bring the same level to clay as he did on hard courts because, as Alcaraz pointed out, there are a lot of sceptics about his clay level. He's good, though, as he's proven in the past by beating players like the Spaniard himself on the surface.

Alcaraz is excited about it, though, as he'll have to fight Sinner and Djokovic in the following weeks for not only trophies but also the number-one ranking. It's shaping up to be an exciting clay season, and he's ready for it.

"He can win every tournament he goes to, and obviously I’m fighting with him and with Novak to be World No. 1. I’m trying to stay there, but honestly it is going to be difficult."
