Carlos Alcaraz is currently world number one on the ATP Tour and he can retain that spot even if he loses to Novak Djokovic.

The battle for the number one rank in tennis was a storyline that didn't get much attention during this Grand Slam. Obviously, the main prize in Paris is the Roland Garros trophy but before the event, we had a situation where four players could end up as number one.

The list of players who can be number one is shorter now but that's normal as there are only a few days of the event left. The match everybody is looking forward to is Novak Djokovic taking on Carlos Alcaraz. It's a match that could determine who is number one at the end of it and more generally history is at stake.

Neither Djokovic nor Alcaraz are probably thinking about it but it's certainly something they would want to achieve as well. The situation is rather clear. Alcaraz can remain number one even if he loses to Djokovic. He would need the Serbian to lose in the final against either Casper Ruud or Alexander Zverev.

If Djokovic beats Alcaraz but loses in the final he'll have about 380 points less than the Spaniard. If Djokovic wins the event then he'll be number one of course having some 420 points more than Alcaraz. If Alcaraz wins the event then he'll be the undisputed number one having over 2140 points more than Djokovic.

It's an exciting prospect making the match even more interesting than it already is. Friday is the day so mark the date and time and we'll see you there. You can see the scenario overview below.
