'Painful Watch': Murray Told To 'Go Away' And 'Decide' After Australian Open Exit

Tim Henman gave his thoughts on what Andy Murray should do next after he lost in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open.

Murray is a five-time finalist in Melbourne, with the last of those finals coming in 2016. He will have had hopes of finding some inspiration at the opening Grand Slam of the year, but that is not what happened.

Sadly for fans of the Scot, Murray suffered a disheartening first-round loss at the 2024 Australian Open. He only won eight games in total across three sets against the Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who progressed very comfortably.

The 36-year-old was understandably feeling downbeat after the manner of the defeat. Murray admitted that he may have played his last Australian Open. Whether that turns out to be true is currently unknown, of course.

Former British No. 1 Henman gave his analysis while working for Eurosport. He started by sympathizing with Murray and saying it was difficult to watch him struggling so much.

"I think it was a painful watch, and he looked lost on and off the court. To hear him in the press conference so down and with very little explanation. It's difficult when you're 36, and you've achieved what he has."

Henman then gave his hope that Murray's hard work would bring him more success, and gave some advice to Murray about future decisions.

"You want to see him enjoying himself on court and reaping the rewards of all the hard work he puts in on the practice court and in the gym and on the track. He needs to go away, analyze it with his team and his family, and decide where he wants to go next."

It is wise advice from Henman. Murray should talk carefully about the future with those around him. It remains to be seen whether the three-time Grand Slam champion will play in Montpellier, where he is on the entry list.
