For those who want to switch to clay courts as soon as possible, the 2024 Cordoba Open presents a unique opportunity, and the entry list reflects that.
Immediately after the first Grand Slam of the season, players have a chance to play on the clay courts during the South American clay-court tour, and the Cordoba Open in Argentina is the first tournament of the series, being held from February 5th to 11th.
Every year, many clay-court specialists, especially from the South American countries, enter the tournament, and 2024 will be no different, with defending champion Sebastian Baez returning to Cordoba.
He won't be the only Argentinian at the event by any means, as he will be joined by fellow compatriots Francisco Cerundolo and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who should be among the top seeds at the tournament.
Another home player, Diego Schwartzman, competed at the event many times in the past, but in 2024, he didn't make it among direct entrants, as he has been struggling with his tennis a lot recently. However, he's the third alternate, meaning that he will enter the main draw after three withdrawals, and even if those don't happen, the Argentinian would likely receive a wild card.
Despite four of the last five champions being from South American countries, many European players find their way to this ATP 250 clay-court tournament too.
In 2024, the likes of Sebastian Ofner, Yannick Hanfmann, Daniel Altmaier, and Roberto Carballes Baena will compete at the tournament, looking to follow Albert Ramos, who is on the entry list too, as the only European winner in the past five years.
Another former champion who will return in 2024 is Cristian Garin from Chile, and the likes of Pedro Cachin, Bernabe Zapata Miralles, Thiago Seyboth Wild, and Juan Pablo Varillas also form a very strong field in Cordoba.
