After two successful runs in 2020 and 2021, the Astana Open in Nur-Sultan officially joined the ATP Tour this year. It will be played out as an ATP 500 event from October 3 to October 9 in 2022.
John Millman and Soonwoo Kwon have won the Astana Open in Nur-Sultan before while it was an ATP 250 tournament. The top tennis stars will be present at the event this year due to a change in circumstances. Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, and teenage phenom Carlos Alcaraz are at the top of the entrance list as the 2022 Astana Open is an ATP 500 event. Therefore, also prize money and points awarded to players increased.
In 2022, the winner will take home 500 points and $355,310 compared to 250 points and $47,080 that the champion got last year. On the other hand, beaten quarterfinalists will get 90 points and $52,060, more than last years champion.
The finalist gets 300 points and $191,180 and semifinalists will be awarded 180 points and $101,890. Major difference between the prize money in ATP 500 and 250 events is also one of the reasons why this year's tournament attracted many more big names.
