How Tennis' Break Point Stacks Against Other Sports Docuseries On Netflix

Viewership numbers of the inaugural season of Netflix's tennis docuseries Break Point have been released in addition to a comparability report with other sports documentaries.

The first season of Break Point revealed a behind-the-scenes look at the ATP and WTA stars competing in all four Grand Slam tournaments and was filmed during the 2022 season. It was subsequently released intermittently in 2023.

The first five episodes premiered on January 13th, 2023, and the second part, also with five episodes, came out towards the end of June 2023, at the same time when Netflix's viewership statistics had been compiled for analysis.

The series is targeted at telling the story of a sport in transition and has coincided with the end of the glorious reigns of legends like Serena Williams and Roger Federer and the emergence of young players like Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune - both of whom feature in Season 2.

However, viewership numbers from the first season make for a very somber reading compared to Formula One's Drive to Survive and Full Swing, which was made in collaboration with the PGA. Break Point ranked 617th among the best TV shows on Netflix.

By contrast, Drive to Survive, which was directed by the same team as Break Point, ranked a high of 121. While Full Swing came out at 274th in the standings. Additionally, Break Point accumulated 30.5 million watch hours, which lagged behind the other two sports documentaries.

Season 5 of Drive to Survive tallied a whopping 90.2 million watch hours, and Full Swing's Season 1 had nearly twice as much in watching time as Break Point at 53.1 million. What is striking is that Break Point was the only show between the three, with a longer running time of 7.8 hours.

The above disparity can be attributed to the staggered release of the Break Point episodes. It is entirely possible that data collected in June, when the second part of the first season was released, was inconclusive.

That is because tennis fans could not have realistically watched all those episodes in less than a week. It will be interesting to see whether there will be an improvement in the highly anticipated second season, featuring new additions like Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Coco Gauff, and Ben Shelton.
