Team USA overcomes Team Great Britain thanks a crucial win in the doubles after Katie Boulter sensationally kept her country alive with a win over Jessica Pegula.
We had a really brilliant matchup today at the United Cup when Team USA took on Team Great Britain. It wasn't expected to be a close match because many expected the Americans to win both singles and secure the tie, but that didn't happen.
Taylor Fritz did what he needed to do by beating Cameron Norrie in two sets. It was a pretty close match, but after the American secured the opening set, things got a bit easier. The final score ended up being 7-6(5) 6-4, with Team USA being up 1-0.
Many expected Jessica Pegula to follow up on that, but it didn't quite happen, even though she had a pretty good start. The match was really competitive and close, with the American taking the opening set 7-5.
The next two sets, however, were won by Boulter, who impressed with her tennis, securing the highly crucial point to keep her country alive.
The final score was 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Now it came down to the doubles, which were always going to be somewhat tricky. On one side, we had Pegula suiting up again with Fritz while experienced doubles specialist Neal Skupski teamed up with Boulter.
The Brits actually won the opening set 6-1, as the Americans were all over the place to start. They would counter in the second set by rallying from a break down to win the set in the tiebreak and then outplayed them in the match tiebreak.
This could have gone completely differently had the Brits held their nerves better in crucial moments. In the end, the Americans win the tie 2-1 thanks to the doubles winning 1-6, 7-6(4), 10-7. It was not ideal for Team Great Britain, but extremely encouraging play from Boulter, who is looking quite dangerous.
