Iga Swiatek was handed a rare code violation before her fourth-round match at the Australian Open, and she wasn’t very happy about it.

Swiatek was getting ready for her fourth-round match at the 2023 Australian Open against Elena Rybakina when she was hit with a code violation for delaying the start of the match. Very few people actually know that there was a rule for this, but there is.

If a player is too late to the start of the match, they are assessed a code violation, which is named in the rules as the 'start of the match violation.' As usual when a tennis player gets a code violation, Swiatek wasn’t happy with it.

She quickly turned to the umpire, protesting and explaining that she didn’t hear the umpire announce the start of the match. Before every match, the umpire announces the start, and while her opponent was ready for it, Swiatek wasn’t.

She was still busy distributing her towels to the boxes assigned to her, which prompted the umpire to give her a code violation. The Polish player didn’t protest too much, though, and quickly spread out her towels, after which she stepped up to play the match.

A code violation like this might be annoying for a player. However, there are proper consequences because she got one code violation closer to a potential point penalty and a game penalty.

If she was assessed a code violation at some point later in the match, she would lose a point. Another one would lose her the game. That’s a bit annoying because she got the first violation for something relatively unremarkable, but the rules are the rules, and the Tours like to keep it as clean as possible.

While interpretation mostly comes down to the umpires, it’s expected that they apply the rules pretty rigorously. Ultimately, Swiatek lost to Rybakina in two sets.
