Danielle Collins wasn’t thrilled with the cameraman at the 2022 Guadalajara Open, asking the umpire to tell them to stop filming her so up close.
Collins was engaged in a fierce battle against Maria Sakkari at the Guadalajara Open, and emotions were running high. Tennis matches can be very stressful for players. It’s not the most pleasant experience, and sometimes even the smallest things can make them snap.
Collins isn’t the most calm player on the WTA Tour, being quite outspoken and not shy to clash with umpires or fellow players on the court. This time around, it was the cameraman who annoyed her as the person got close to her a couple of times during the match, and she didn’t appreciate it at all.
The first request from Collins was made to the umpire, as she asked to tell the camera person to back up a little bit. She clearly felt her private space was invaded, and she was not wrong; the camera was indeed quite close to her.
"Would you just ask the cameraman if they can back up a little bit?"
The umpire did as she asked, but the cameraman didn’t really back up at all. That prompted Collins to tell the person operating the camera directly to back up, after which the person finally listened and backed up a bit.
"Can you back up, please? Thank you."
Filming her up close, however, didn’t stop after that, as it happened a couple more times in the match. Collins, clearly fed up with being filmed so closely, finally lost her patience and firmly told the cameraman to back off.
In the end, the match continued without too many more incidents. Sakkari ended up winning the match in three sets, keeping herself in the running to win the event. As for Collins, her season likely ended with this loss.
