Azarenka Hits Back at Swiatek Comments About Support for Ukrainian Players

Victoria Azarenka has opposed arguments from Iga Swiatek about supporting Ukranian players in the WTA.

During the Indian Wells tournament earlier in March, Swiatek argued that the WTA must do more to support Ukrainian players rather than focus on sanctions against Russian and Belarusian competitors.

In the past year, players from Russia and Belarus have been excluded from certain tournaments following Russia's war with Ukraine and Swiatek continues to speak out on the subject. However, speaking ahead of the upcoming Miami Open, former world number one Azarenka argued against Swiatek's views.

"Obviously, there are certain players that have different feelings and behaviours. Overall, I don’t necessarily share the same opinion as Iga does. I would encourage her to look at the things that have been done before she makes comments.”

To further her point, Azarenka went on to say the WTA has evidence of work done to support Ukranian players,. The Belerusian player explained that as a member of the WTA Council, she would happily share more with Swiatek about what's being done.

"Obviously, as a player council (member), I am happy to provide all those facts that have been done. And I think that would be a more appropriate way to have that conversation.”

Tensions continue to rise between WTA players as a result of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, players from Russia and Belarus can still participate in WTA events in the 2023 season and they must enter as neutral participants rather than representing their country.

Azarenka will return to action at the Miami Open tomorrow as she takes on Camila Giorgi. The 33-year-old crashed out in the second round at Indian Wells recently after losing against Karolína Muchova.

But reigning champion and world number one Swiatek will not take part in Miami. She withdrew from the competition due to injury.
