Emma Raducanu is set to play her first match since Australian Open, but a wrist injury is troubling her.
In 2023, Raducanu played only four matches, winning two of those and retiring in one. Now, she traveled to Indian Wells and wants to get back to winning, but her first appearance on the tennis court was postponed, as the Brit was set to play in an exhibition event - the Eisenhower Cup - but withdrew shortly before the event to preserve her body.
The 20-year-old is scheduled to play her first match in Indian Wells, but her participation is not sure as Raducanu struggles with yet another injury. "When it rains, it pours," she said as she's trying to recover in time from an unlucky setback. In an interview with SkySports ahead of the event, she said:
" It's like where I'm at right now, I wouldn't say is the bottom. I think there are further places down to go. I think that it has definitely been an experience and I've learned a lot from trying to climb my way back up. And I think the biggest thing is just putting the work in consistently day in, day out as much as I can."
Trying to focus on the positives and moving in the right direction, Raducanu tries to set short-term goals and focus on doing good things to eventually see the big result.
"I'm just doing what I can on, on each day. I think at the end of the day, if I can look back, and say, I got something out of today, and do that every single day, it's easier to set those short-term sites and goals. Otherwise, things can seem quite daunting if you look too far ahead. In the immediate future, just taking care of the day, I think helps and then accumulating as many of those as possible."
Only recently, Raducanu was forced to withdraw from the 2023 ATX Open in Austin, and according to her own words, she was coming to Texas after a very good couple of weeks of training just to get an infection.
"I had an amazing couple weeks training in London. I was feeling very, very good about my tennis, about my game, and, I landed and I got a viral infection in Austin. So I, I felt very sick. I was probably the worst I've ever felt sickness-wise and to recover, it took a while, but now I'm feeling okay."
Raducanu was also awarded a wild card for the 2023 Miami Open and therefore, she was asked whether it wouldn't be more beneficial for her to work her way through the qualifying as she didn't have many chances to compete this year.
"I think it depends. I think qualifying is very beneficial. I qualified and won the US Open. So it is good and I think a lot of players are qualifying and winning the tournaments now, and it helps work your way into the tournament. But I'm very grateful to have received the wild card to Miami Open and I think in this scenario, I would take it. But definitely, qualifying isn't a negative thing."
