Coco Gauff had high hopes for her Cincinnati Open experience, but the American is out of the event after just one match.
Gauff started her post-Wimbledon US Open preparation at the WTA event in San Jose, where she played some really solid tennis. Even the match she lost against Paula Badosa opened well for her, but she struggled to keep the same consistent level throughout the match.
That event was followed up by her solid run at the Canadian Open, where she made the quarter-final, losing to eventual champion Simona Halep. The American player still left Toronto with a trophy, as she won the doubles event.
Partnering with Jessica Pegula, Gauff played a superb event to win the trophy, beating Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez in the final 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-5.
With that rising form, fans expected lots of great things from Gauff in Cincinnati. As an American, she was expected to do well at the event. Americans generally do really well at events that are played on their native soil.
She’s also one of the better players in the world, so naturally, expectations were high. There wasn’t any track record of her doing really well at the event in the past, but still, with her form going up, there was a decent amount of expectations.
It didn’t quite happen that way, as Gauff is out after only one match. She was facing the very tricky Marie Bouzkova, who won the opening set, after which Gauff retired from the match, down 0-1 in the second.
Retiring isn’t something common for Gauff, but as she announced after the match, she suffered a minor sprain. She did calm everybody down, explaining that she was okay and it was not a major issue.
"I just wanted to give an update since I have gotten tons of really nice messages of concern. I promise I am ok! The world is not ending lol!"
"I have been told it is most likely a really minor sprain so everything should be healed very soon. Thank you to everyone for reaching out and I'll see you soon."
