Coco Gauff won the biggest trophy of her career at the Cincinnati Open, and she expressed a lot of gratitude for this moment.
Since her arrival on the WTA Tour, many knew that Gauff would win big trophies. Despite being part of the top for a while, the American didn't have any signature trophies before this year's WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
She has won a couple of big tournaments in doubles and became the World No. 1 player in that discipline, but in singles, it was a bigger struggle for her to properly break through with a big title.
Before the Cincinnati Open, she won her biggest trophy up until that point recently at the Citi Open in Washington. A few weeks later, she finally won a WTA 1000 trophy after beating Karolina Muchova in the Cincinnati Open final.
Speaking during the trophy ceremony after the match, Gauff reflected on some of her biggest moments of doubt, admitting to crying while trying to figure things out, and started her speech by thanking Jesus Christ.
Things finally falling into place meant a lot to her, and she expressed a lot of gratitude in her speech after getting the trophy. She has overcome some shaky moments in Europe, playing rather poorly on clay, which was unusual for her.
After all, she played in the Roland Garros final last year, but couldn't really replicate that level this year. Now, she is a WTA 1000 champion, a moment she will certainly remember for years to come.
"This is unbelievable. Especially after what I went through in Europe ealire this summer. I'm just happy to be in this moment. I’d like to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ. I spent a lot of nights alone, crying trying to figure it out. I still have a lot to figure out, but I thank him for covering me."
Gauff now has a little bit of time to process this victory, but will soon have to get back to work in order to prepare for the upcoming US Open.
