Teenage Superstar Andreeva Reaches Maiden Major Quarter-Final At Roland Garros

by Zachary Wimer

Teenager superstar Mirra Andreeva is through to her maiden major quarter-final at the 2024 Roland Garros after beating Varvara Gracheva.

The Russian was turning heads even last year at Roland Garros but she lost in the fourth round against Coco Gauff. This year, she played some smashing tennis to advance past the fourth round with this win and secure a quarter-final spot for the first time at a Grand Slam.

It will be her first major quarter-final, and it's not a surprise that it happened in Paris because clay is her best surface. Her fourth-round opponent was native player Gracheva, who herself has had a good week.

The teenager, though, was the huge favorite before the match because her level was largely more impressive, and she bested better players along the way. Her favorite tag was confirmed by her performance in the match, as she won in two sets.

The first one was quite close, even though the 17-year-old had plenty of chances to make it less close. She missed out on a couple of early break points, and when she finally broke, the French player immediately broke back.

Andreeva won the set a bit later, though, converting a fourth set point. After winning the opening set, the Russian was able to relax a bit more, so things went smoother in the second set.

She lost her initial early break but then finished the match on a 4-0 run to close it out, winning 7-5, 6-2. It was just a very solid display from the teenager, who was slightly more precise.
