Iga Swiatek proved her greatness at the 2024 United Cup, beating former WTA's world no. 1, Angelique Kerber in her last singles match at the tournament.
Coming into the final tie against Germany, the Polish no. 1 was yet to lose a match in 2024, and Kerber, who had just won her first match as a mother, wanted to test the qualities of the current world no. 1.
It was a crucial match for both, as the following men's singles match between Hubert Hurkacz and Alexander Zverev can be won by anyone, so this victory could have proved to crucial for both countries.
Early in the match, it seemed like a very close battle. Kerber had two break points in the fifth game, but after she didn't use those, the Pole had the same amount of break points in the following game, but she also did not use those.
The trend continued in the following game, as the German had three more break points, but once again, she could not use those. Again, Swiatek repeated that in the following game, but this time, she used her last break point to secure the first break of the match.
It was a crucial break, and since then, it has also been a one-woman show in the 2024 United Cup final match, as the Polish player did not allow her opponent to win any more games.
Swiatek won the first set 6-3, and in the second set, Kerber could not find many answers to her opponent's questions. The Pole had three break points, used all of them, and she lost only two points on her serve and seven points in total in the second set.
The result was a one-sided 6-3, 6-0 win, which gave Poland an important 1-0 lead in the 2024 United Cup final. Now, it's time for Hurkacz and Zverev to battle it out.
