Despite utterly dominating against Coco Gauff in the past, Iga Swiatek is expecting a tough match with the American at the 2024 Roland Garros.
Very few players dominated a matchup as well as Swiatek so far against Gauff. The current H2H record between them shows 10-1 for the Polish player, with most of the wins heavily lopsided.
The only match that the American won against the world no. 1 was last year in Cincinnati, and it was because of a combination of factors, including Gauff's incredible play. The American played well in that match, but in all three matches since then, she didn't win a single set, so it's not a case of her turning around the matchup.
The only match this year between them was played recently in Rome, and the Pole won it with some minor issues at the start of the match. She's won all four matches against Gauff on clay, and two of those wins happened in Paris as well.
Even so, the Polish player expects a motivated Gauff to show up on the Court Philippe-Chatrier, which won't be easy to overcome.
"Honestly the same as before any match. You don’t wanna change your routines. It’s good to keep going and not think of this match as something huge. Against Coco it isn’t easy. She really likes clay, especially here. I’ll just focus on myself and I’ll prepare tactically and we’ll see."
The match may be very interesting, just because both have been playing so well. Swiatek is like a robot out there, not making any mistakes and cleaning all the lines. Gauff, on the other hand, has her own good skillset, which she can use, but she will have to win the match from the baseline, and that's going to be tough.
One of the best baseline hitters, Aryna Sabalenka, failed to do that twice in a row in Madrid and Rome, and Gauff is not known for being the best hitter or having the most devastating forehand.
