Aryna Sabalenka won the 2024 Australian Open, and Iga Swiatek congratulated her with a brilliant social media post.
The Belarusian enjoyed another incredible fortnight in Melbourne, adding her second Grand Slam title to her collection. After winning the Australian Open last year, Sabalenka also repeated the success in 2024, and her rival didn't witness it up close, as she didn't share the tennis court with her in the final.
The Polish player lost early at the event, but still, she followed the tournament until the final round and saw her rival Sabalenka lift the trophy, after which she congratulated the Belarusian on winning the 2024 Australian Open with a rather short but straight-to-the-point social media post.
"Congrats @SabalenkaA on 2nd title in Australia, impressive!"
The achievement was pretty deserving because no player was better than Sabalenka during the 2024 Australian Open. She finished off her campaign with a straight sets win over Qinwen Zheng 6-3 6-2.
She won the trophy last year as well, so this was a successful title defense and a very dominant one at that as she didn't drop a single set. Swiatek was widely considered the number one favorite to win the Australian Open, but she stumbled shockingly against Linda Noskova.
That was certainly not the way she wanted it to go, but ultimately, that's what happened. We'll see what the future brings for Sabalenka and Swiatek, as they are widely expected to battle it out for the number one spot on the WTA Tour, with no other player being able to challenge them at the moment.
We'll see who comes out on top and whether Swiatek once again outplays Sabalenka for the number one rank. When it comes to Grand Slams, it was 1-1 last year, and in 2024, it's 1-0 for Sabalenka. However, the Pole still leads 4-2 overall.
