Iga Swiatek has admitted that she has struggled with consistency in previous seasons on grass as she looks ahead to the 2023 Wimbledon.
The WTA world number one added a third Roland Garros title to her trophy cabinet on Saturday, June 10 with a hard-fought, three-set victory over Karolina Muchova. It was also the Polish player's fourth Grand Slam title after the 22-year-old also tasted success at the 2022 US Open.
However, competing on grass has not been so straightforward for Swiatek in recent years and she has never progressed further than the fourth round. When reflecting on her former struggles at SW19 with Eurosport, Swiatek admitted to finding grass tournaments more difficult than the other majors.
"Grass-court season is something I haven't figured out yet, so Wimbledon is always a different challenge to any of the other Slams."
Yet, despite her difficulties on grass, Swiatek remains confident heading into Wimbledon this season. The 22-year-old believes she has become the must-beat player in the WTA, especially as she has held on to the number-one spot for over a year.
In addition, the Polish player certainly has the winning momentum in her favour this season. Before her third Roland Garros victory, Swiatek also won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and the Qatar Open earlier in the 2023 campaign.
“But I would say winning Slams, it gives you kind of confidence that you can do it again on one hand, but on the other hand, everybody is watching you, everyone is targeting your back so you feel that a little bit and the pressure is bigger."
"It makes it actually more special for players who do it when they are on top because it shows you you can do it and you’re strong enough to do it, so I feel that right now.”
