Serena Williams had hopes of buying a part share in Chelsea FC after the club went on sale, but her ambitions of partnering with Sir Martin Broughton and Lewis Hamilton to buy the club appear to be fading.
When Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea Football Club earlier in 2022, a slew of bidders quickly emerged for the London-based team. According to Sky Sports, among the potential new owners was a consortium of former WTA world number one Serena Williams, Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton, and former Liverpool FC and British Airways chairman Martin Broughton.
The trio reportedly put forward an initial bid of around £10 million to acquire Chelsea FC. However, Todd Boehly, a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers, appears to be the favorite for purchase following new developments.
As a result, Williams' pursuit of purchasing Chelsea has declined, as she and the consortium of Hamilton and Broughton are not currently the preferred bidders.
Chelsea has been one of the most successful football clubs domestically and in Europe in recent decades under former owner Abramovich. Between 2005 and 2022, the club won the Champions League and five Premier League titles.
However, the Russian oligarch was forced to sell the club following international sanctions on Russian businessmen following Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
The setback is unlikely to trouble Serena Williams, who is still competing in WTA competitions and could feature at Wimbledon later this year.
In addition, the 40-year-old American owns many shares in various companies through her Serena Ventures, as during her tennis career, she acquired almost $100 million in prize money.
However, despite her interest in alternative ventures, Williams has not featured on the WTA Tour since 2021, when she was eliminated in round one at Wimbledon by Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Due to her lack of tennis activity this season, rumors about Williams' potential retirement continue to rise.
