Although Serena Williams played the last match of her tennis career at the 2022 US Open, it seems that she may change her mind very soon.
It's always difficult for athletes to say the last goodbye to the sport they love and spent their whole life playing. In the world of tennis, we've seen many players come back even after retiring, and Serena Williams could also be one of them.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion announced that she wouldn't be playing after the 2022 US Open, and all of her matches in the Flushing Meadows were sold out, with many celebrities coming to witness the last matches of the 40-year-old American.
However, despite previously stating that it would be her last tournament, Williams already hinted that she could come back at the 2023 Australian Open.
She triumphed in Melbourne seven times in her career, and also where she lifted her last Grand Slam trophy. Speaking after her loss in New York, the 23-time Grand Slam champion said that she was ready to start a life as a mom.
"I'm ready to, like, be a mom, explore a different version of Serena. Technically, in the world, I'm still super young, so I want to have a little bit of a life while I'm still walking."
However, she also said that she wasn't sure whether it was truly her last match. She added that she loves Australia, hinting that she might return at the Australian Open.
"(I) don't know (if it was my last match). I'm not thinking about that. I always did love Australia, though (smiling). But yeah, you know what, I've come a long way since last year at Wimbledon."
"Just not sure if that was my last moment or not. Making it a different moment, I think, is much better. Yeah, and it takes a lot of work to get here. Clearly, I'm still capable. It takes a lot more than that."
