Emma Raducanu's 2024 Wimbledon journey was good while it lasted, but it could have been even better, which signals the need to improve.
Raducanu's return to tennis in 2024 yielded some iconic moments, such as her carrying the British team past France on clay in France in the Billie Jean King Cup. She also had to endure some disappointing moments, such as the loss to Daria Kasatkina in Eastbourne, in which the British player seemed lost.
Her Wimbledon campaign, however, was very good, with some impressive wins, but her exit to a qualifier was a bit surprising. Raducanu was the favorite to win the match, and she likely could have, but it was a lesson in many ways.
She's a great player, but there are many areas that she needs to improve in to become even better. After the match, she spoke openly about it, admitting that inconsistency in her game is a big issue to address, whether it's the serve or just live play.
"There are areas I need to keep improving. Certain things I have been doing better over the grass-court season. I think I improved a few things. My serve got better. But I think I need to work on the consistency of it. Being good every day, not just like some days."
The Brit seems to be quite determined to improve and become an even better player. She mentioned weeks ago how she rediscovered the fire again, which was great to hear, but her actions will measure that fire.
Saying the right things is one thing, but doing them is another. The results will ultimately be the best measure of how seriously she meant what she said, as she doubled down on her comments at SW19.
"It honestly makes me more determined. I think I really put myself first in the last few months. Now, tennis is the only thing that’s really occupying my time, my mind… it’s all I wanna do. I think that desire and fire is back. I just wanna keep building on that."
