Raducanu Gives Verdict On Playing For Great Britain In Billie Jean King Cup In 2024

| by Zachary Wimer

Emma Raducanu hasn't played for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup for a while, and she may get a call-up this year.

Raducanu played for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup in 2022, which was her debut, playing against the Czech Republic. She enjoyed her time with the team, but since then, she didn't get to play for the country.

She snubbed it a few times already, which caused some sort of tension between her and Team Captain Anne Keothavong, but the British player was also stopped by injuries on some occasions.

Some words exchanged through the media were more on the cold side, but the Brit hasn't ruled out returning to the competition in the future. In an interview with the BBC ahead of the Indian Wells Open, Raducanu admitted that she doesn't know if she'll get the call-up, but she would be open to playing.

"I don't know if I'll get the call-up. But if she asks me to, I think it makes sense because it's before [the WTA tournament in] Stuttgart [which is also] on indoor clay."

Raducanu didn't emphatically say yes, but she would likely accept the call-up as it would fit her schedule. There will be some things to consider for Keothavong, like form because Katie Boulter is by far the best British player right now after winning her first WTA 500 trophy.

There are also experienced veterans like Heather Watson, who has been playing well lately, and some other players like Harriet Dart, who will likely also wait for a call-up.

Raducanu will be among the candidates, too, but she doesn't have a lot of experience with clay and, more importantly, indoor clay. Playing in the Billie Jean King Cup would be important for the Brit as she also wants to play at the Olympics in Paris at the Roland Garros, too.
