Iga Swiatek seemed in a bit of a rush in the fourth round of the 2024 Roland Garros, as she thrashed her opponent in 40 minutes, 6-0, 6-0.
Double bagel wins do happen in tennis, but they're very rare, happening barely, almost never on the men's side and occasionally on the women's side of the sport. The Polish no. 1 is no stranger to them, though, as she famously handed one out in the final in Rome a few years ago.
That was against former world no. 1 Karolina Pliskova no less, and it took less than an hour to complete, and her match in Paris was similar. The opponent was Anastasia Potapova, and it also took much less than an hour to complete.
Already before the season's only clay-court major, it was clear that Swiatek was the best player on the red dirt and the biggest favorite to win the tournament, but every time she produces a performance like this, it reminds of how good she could be.
Reacting immediately after, Swiatek admitted that she didn't focus on the score but rather just playing the game. The top seed branded the final score 'pretty weird.'
"I mean it feltt he same but I was just really focused and really in the zone and wasn't really looking at the score so I just continued playing my game and continued to work on the stuff I wanted to work on and it went quickly. Pretty weird."
The Polish player is now only a few matches away from winning the event for the fourth time and third time in a row. If she does that, she'll equal the historic achievement of only a few other players who were able to win it three times in a row as well.
Judging by how she's playing right now and how focused she is, there is a good chance it will happen, but up next there will be a Grand Slam champion standing in her way, as she'll take on Marketa Vondrousova.
