Iga Swiatek continued her onslaught his year with another brilliant week in Rome taking down Ons Jabeur in straight sets in the final.

It was a successful title defence week for the Polish player who dominated the entire week including the final. Jabeur has been sensational lately entering the final with an 11-match winning streak but she was no match to Swiatek who won over 25 matches in a row. Despite the want to keep politics out of sports, a question was posed to her regarding the situation around the Wimbledon ban.

Since early March, Swiatek has been playing with a ribbon pinned to her hat featuring the colours of Ukraine’s flag. She did not specifically comment on the ban but she did call it pretty weird that other players have stopped wearing tributes to Ukraine reiterating that she would continue to wear it:

“I’m going to wear it until the situation is going to get better."

Speaking further on the situation she recognized the closeness of Poland to the situation:

“For sure the war is affecting Poland a little bit more. It’s something that I can’t experience with them because I’m traveling all around Europe. I for sure want to show my support to Ukrainian people, as every Polish person is doing at home.”
