Paula Badosa won't be competing at the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal after she was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
Grand Slams and WTA 1000 tournaments are always those where players want to peak and perform the best. Unfortunately for Badosa, she couldn't do that in 2023 because of injuries, recently also retiring at Wimbledon in her second-round match against Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine.
After that, the Spaniard started a battle with time, as the North American swing was coming fast, and the main objective was certainly not rushing the recovery, given that after the 2023 Canadian Open, there are still the 2023 Cincinnati Masters and the 2023 US Open.
A few weeks later, we know that Badosa didn't win the fight with time, at least the initial one, as she was forced to withdraw from the tournament in Montreal, being replaced by Magdalena Frech from Poland in the first-round match against Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil.
For now, the Spanish player will want to focus on her recovery and not look at the WTA Rankings, as she currently sits in the 45th position, far from her career-high second place, which she reached on April 25th, 2022.
During one of the recent interviews, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Badosa's boyfriend, said that she misses her during travels, and so likely, the Spanish player will now join the Greek in Toronto, where he's set to compete, as the two are then expected to travel to Cincinnati and then Flushing Meadows in New York.
For Badosa, competing at the US Open and doing well may be the necessary confidence boost that she'll need ahead of the 2024 season, as this year could slowly but surely be crowned as injury-plagued and not as successful as the Spanish player probably expected after the last year's career-high.
