Ostapenko Beats Kasatkina To Claim Her First Title Of 2024 In Adelaide

Jelena Ostapenko returned to the winner's circle early in 2024, winning the Adelaide International after beating Daria Kasatkina.

The Latvian managed to win a title every year since 2021, and she has already extended her streak this year, winning the second WTA event that she entered in 2024.

This year is a year of comebacks for Ostapenko, as she recently made sure that she would return into the Top 10 after six years, and she also won her first WTA 500 tournament since 2022.

After overcoming challenging opponents such as Sorana Cirstea, Caroline Garcia, Marta Kostyuk, and Ekaterina Alexandrova, another challenging opponent awaited the Latvian, but Kasatkina had to win only two matches en route to the final, as both Laura Siegemund and Jessica Pegula withdrew from the tournament.

That meant the Russian didn't need to play her quarterfinal and semifinal matches, so she could benefit from extra rest in the final match against the 2017 French Open champion.

But the start of the match was better for Ostapenko, who got an early break, and despite losing it immediately, the 26-year-old added one more, and this time she controlled the proceedings on her serve, losing only one more point in the remainder of the opening set to win it 6-3.

The second set wasn't any better for Kasatkina, who struggled to trouble her opponent. Ostapenko simply controlled what was happening on the court, and the Russian didn't seem to have answers to her questions.

The result of this were three breaks of serve from the sixth seed, to which Kastkina had only one answer. Therefore, Ostapenko was able to win the second set, and the match 6-3, 6-2 to claim the 2024 Adelaide International title, her first of the 2024 season, and head into the Australian Open on a winning streak.
