Leylah Fernandez is enduring a frustrating period on the sidelines, but the Canadian is also using her time out of the game to help struggling people.

It is nearly a year since Fernandez shocked the tennis world by reaching the final of the US Open. Her incredible run in New York included victories against former champions at the event Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber.

Despite losing to Emma Raducanu in the final, hopes were high for the 19-year-old this season. After a slow start to the year, she found form by progressing to the quarterfinal of the French Open.

Unfortunately, Fernandez sustained an injury in her quarterfinal against Martina Trevisan. The Canadian still managed to take the match to a deciding set but eventually lost out to the Italian.

Fernandez subsequently revealed that she had fractured her foot and was on crutches as a result. The US Open runner-up also admitted that she will not be able to play at Flushing Meadows this year, which is a shame.

However, Fernandez has always discussed the importance of helping others and staying humble. That explains her decision to work with the charity Feeding South Florida to help those in need. She announced the news in a social media post.

"Back in Miami and proud to have joined the team at @FeedingSouthFlorida today to help inspect, sort, and repack food for distribution to those in need. If you’re interested in donating, volunteering or getting involved with the food bank’s hunger-relief efforts, head to the link in our bio to learn more."

Fernandez is already well-known for her engaging and approachable personality. This story demonstrates that once again.
