Canadian tennis experienced a boom this year, with the men's national team winning the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.
That team's leader was Felix Auger-Aliassime, who reached his peak this year just in time to lead his nation and win a few trophies. It was his best tennis accomplishment to date, and he was honored by being awarded Canada's Player of the Year in recognition of his efforts.
The 2022 season has been by far the most successful season of the Canadian's career. He managed to win 60 matches, and also won four ATP titles. First, he triumphed in Rotterdam, then he won in Florence before winning in Antwerp, and also lifting the trophy in Basel.
All of that meant that he was able to finish as the world no. 6 in the ATP Rankings and also play at his maiden ATP Finals, a year-end tournament on the ATP Tour.
On the other hand, Leylah Fernandez, who showed her potential at the 2021 US Open, where she finished as a runner-up, won that title on the WTA Tour, following a run of generally positive outcomes.
Despite finishing lower in the WTA Rankings than in 2021, the Canadian still ended the year as the world no. 40, and she managed to win 21 matches as well.
Her best results came in Monterrey, where she was able to win the title, as well as the Roland Garros, where Fernandez reached the quarterfinals before losing to Italy's Martina Trevisan.
Up next, the 2023 season will be a big year for Canadian tennis. While on the men's Tour, Auger-Aliassime will want to prove that his 2022 success was not a fluke, Denis Shapovalov will certainly want to join his efforts.
The same applies to the women's Tour. Fernandez will want to prove her qualities once more, and fellow compatriot Bianca Andreescu will want to join her in those efforts.
