Kenin Set For Top 100 Return After More Than A Year Following Wimbledon Upset

It's been a while since Sofia Kenin was ranked in the WTA Top 100 and she's heading there following this year's Wimbledon.

Sofia Kenin is attempting a comeback this year and so far it's been going well as the American is looking as well as she had in recent years. Her breakout in 2020 saw her win one Grand Slam and reach the final of another one but ever since then it was mostly a struggle with injuries.

She attempted a few comebacks but never quite got it done as another injury would creep in. This year, Kenin has been healthier than most and it's showing on the court. She's slowly getting that hitting ability back and a perfect demonstration was against Gauff at Wimbledon.

She played a pretty strong match hitting the ball really well and pushing Gauff around the court. While the American has tremendous speed, she couldn't really handle all of that and Kenin secured a major win. It's a rather significant win as well as she's projected to make a return to the Top 100 with the points earned at this year's Wimbledon.

Besides making the second round, Kenin also has the points from going through the qualifiers successfully and booking a spot in the main draw. Kenin was 128th before Wimbledon began, but as of right now, she's projected to be ranked 94th after Wimbledon thanks to the new points. Obviously she could be ranked even higher if she keeps up playing well at Wimbledon.

Her next opponent is Xinyu Wang, a very solid player but one that Kenin could certainly beat. If she wins that match she will rise even further through the ranks. Another thing that's important for Kenin is the ability to enter events directly and that's directly tied to her ranking.

She hasn't been ranked in the Top 100 since February of last year and that's made it very hard for ever to play regularly. A good run at Wimbledon could allow her to have an easier time going forward which would be important. She's certainly happy about that, as she's happy about the current state of the US tennis.

"Yeah, I feel like women's tennis, U.S. women's tennis is, like, unbelievable right now. Everyone is playing so well. Jessie, Maddie, Coco of course, everyone else. That obviously tries to push me out there to be, like, at the top. Yeah, I mean, I think it's just great for American tennis. I'm just super happy."
