Ons Jabeur shared why she won't wear coloured underwear at Wimbledon, even after the recent rule change allows it.
The Tunisian player loves to play at Wimbledon and has played well over the past few years. She went to the final last year, won the opening set but then lost to Elena Rybakina in three sets. It was a disappointing end for her but she's returning this year with an added motivation to get things done hoping to make history.
One thing that bothered many players over the past few years, especially on the WTA Tour, was the strict dress code. An all-white dress code has been in place pretty much for the entirety of the event and while it made Wimbledon stand out it also created some unfortunate situations for the players taking part in the event.
The underwear had to be white as well which made a lot of women worry about having an unpleasant moment while on the court. Obviously, white underwear is quite susceptible to showing any colour and many players experienced anxiety because of it.
The rules were changed last year to allow underwear in different colours, something that many welcomed including legendary player Billie Jean King. It was not the only rule change as the event sought to modernize itself and keep up with the times but also retain some of the things that ultimately make it iconic.
There were multiple changes, that were long-awaited. Last year's finalist Ons Jabeur shared her thoughts on the rule changes admitting that she likely won't wear different-coloured underwear despite it being allowed this year.
There is two things. One thing, it’s better definitely not to be paranoid. And the other thing, everybody will know that you have your period. So I’m not sure which part of it is good.
I think I don’t think I’m going to wear anything. If all the girls will wear it, I think it will make it better. But I think it’s a great thing that Wimbledon is trying to help women feel more comfortable on the court.
