Ons Jabeur continued her tremendous 2022 campaign at this year’s US Open, reaching the final but ultimately being defeated by Iga Swiatek, leaving her devastated.
What can be said about Ons Jabeur's 2022 campaign, except that it has been impressive? She reached the Wimbledon final not too long ago; however, she couldn't overcome Elena Rybakina in that match.
Now, in New York, Jabeur made her way to yet another final, but unfortunately, she was beaten once again. This time around, it was Swiatek who crushed the dreams of the Tunisian, winning 6-2, 7-6(5), and the loss was painful.
Aryna Sabalenka cried after her loss to Swiatek in the semi-final, and now the Polish player caused another fellow competitor to cry. After the final, cameras spotted Jabeur in the locker room, crying her heart out, which was heartbreaking to witness.
The Tunisian is a proper trailblazer in the world of tennis, doing amazing things for Arab women by demonstrating that it is possible to succeed and inspiring future generations of players from a part of the world that hasn’t yielded many tennis stars.
Winning a Grand Slam would certainly help possibly inspire the youth there to pick up a racket, but it wasn’t meant to be this time around. Winning one clearly means a lot to Jabeur, as evidenced by the tears she shed both after Wimbledon and the US Open. Her words following the match certainly prove that as well.
"This one is going to be tough. We'll tell you in the next few days if I'm going to be able to sleep a little bit. It's part of tennis. Winning or losing is part of it. And, fortunately, it is me. I struggled to win my first WTA title. It took me time. So I believe this will take me time."
