Iga Swiatek has enjoyed one of the best winning streaks seen in tennis for a long time, but the Pole continues to be realistic about the future despite her heroics in recent months.
After reaching the semifinal of the Australian Open at the start of the season, the Pole lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the second round in Dubai. Many will have expected her level to then drop until the clay court season.
However, Swiatek's extraordinary run began after that. She started by claiming the title in Doha before completing the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami. Her winning streak was extended to 19 with two triumphs at the Billie Jean King Cup.
The World No. 1 continued her dominance on clay. After taking home another title in Stuttgart, Swiatek made it five tournament victories in a row by beating Ons Jabeur in the Italian Open final.
Her second-round French Open win against Alison Riske means Swiatek's undefeated run now stands at 30 matches. However, she still maintained a down-to-earth tone in her remarks after beating Riske.
"I'm going to reach a point where I'm going to lose a match, and it's pretty normal. I have been losing matches in tennis for a long time. For sure, the things we are doing right now are pretty extraordinary, but I know in tennis that only one person wins at the end."
Swiatek's maturity at the age of just 20 is incredible. Her outstanding tennis in the last few months has not made her lose sight of the fact that some tougher moments will inevitably come in the future.
Nonetheless, she is correct in saying that what she is achieving at the moment is extraordinary. The world No. 1's sole Grand Slam title came at the French Open in 2020, which means she has a great chance of extending her winning run even further.
