Polish tennis sensation Iga Swiatek has announced her withdrawal from the 2023 Adelaide International 2 tournament due to an injury.
The world no. 1 had previously represented Poland in the inaugural United Cup, where she won all three group-stage matches before falling to Jessica Pegula in the semifinals as her country was later eliminated by the United States.
Swiatek had been set to compete in Adelaide as the top seed, but will now be replaced by Caroline Garcia in the draw. The next player to be seeded, Danielle Collins, will move into Garcia's vacated spot in the draw.
While the injury is not believed to be serious, it does raise questions about Swiatek's availability for the upcoming Australian Open. The 21-year-old had a breakout season in 2022, winning the Roland Garros and US Open and finishing the year as the no. 1 player in the world.
Swiatek's withdrawal from Adelaide 2 is a blow to the tournament, as the young star had been one of the main attractions. However, with a strong field still in place, the tournament is sure to be an exciting one.
As for Swiatek, fans will be holding their breath as they wait to see if she will be able to compete in the Australian Open. If she is unable to play, it will be a major disappointment for the young star and for fans who were hoping to see her extend the lead as the top player on the WTA Tour.
