Iga Swiatek ensured that tennis won once again as the Polish player was named the 2022 European Sportsperson of the Year.
In 2022, the 21-year-old Polish player proved to everyone that she was the future of women's tennis. She had one of the best seasons on the WTA Tour in recent history, as she won eight titles, and finished the year as world no. 1, also winning two major trophies.
During the extremely successful, Swiatek even had a 37-match win streak, which was ended by Alize Cornet at the Wimbledon Championship. The two Grand Slam titles she won were the Roland Garros and the US Open, and she added six more WTA Tour-level trophies.
She has been recognized for her efforts in multiple different ways, also being named the 2022 WTA Player Of the Year. Now, Swiatek has been recognized also internationally, as she was named the 2022 European Sportsperson Of the Year.
Last year's winner was Novak Djokovic, and Iga Swiatek made sure that tennis won the award again this year by beating fellow European athletes who had a very successful season.
Dutch race driver Max Verstappen won his second World Drivers' Championship in 2022, and Swedish athlete Armand Duplantis also had a very successful season, winning the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, as well as the Diamond League, World Indoor Championships, and the European Championships.
Yet, the Polish tennis player managed to beat both of them, as Verstappen finished second while Duplantis placed third, with Swiatek taking the trophy. She joined a number of Polish winners, including football superstar Robert Lewandowski, who won the award in 2020.
Swiatek also placed in front of several other tennis players, such as Carlos Alcaraz, who finished fourth in the ranking. Rafael Nadal finished 5th while Novak Djokovic was also in consideration but placed only 15th.
