Iga Swiatek has been utterly spectacular so far this year, winning multiple events and over 20 matches in a row.
The Polish player took over the World No. 1 ranking from Ashleigh Barty after the Australian tennis player retired from the sport, but she didn’t get it gifted. Swiatek earned it on the courts by winning multiple events, most of them prestigious.
She won the Qatar Open in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, and the Italian Open recently. In total, she arrived in Paris without dropping a set in Rome, and since the courts at that WTA 1000 event play similarly to the courts in Paris, she was properly prepared for the clay-court major.
Lesia Tsurenko was the challenger that Swiatek faced in her first match in the French capital, and it wasn’t much of a challenging match for her. While Tsurenko is a solid player who possesses strong baseline-hitting capabilities, the Polish player was able to overcome all of that.
Even Tsurenko's experience as one of the more seasoned players on the WTA Tour didn’t really help much, as the Polish player completely outplayed her. The opening set started well for Swiatek, and very quickly, she found herself up 3-0.
She increased the lead by adding another break after winning another 9 points and getting a 5-1 lead in the first set. However, she then lost her serve and one break, which she recovered in the next game with a game to love.
To demonstrate how dominant Swiatek was, she won 12 of the first 14 points. It doesn’t get much better than that, but it certainly got much better than that for Swiatek when it comes to the score.
She won the opening set 6-2, and the second set was even more impressive from the top seed as she served up a bagel for Tsurenko, who simply couldn’t do anything.
She hit 10 winners, while her opponent hit only one, and both players made seven unforced errors. Swiatek won 69% of the points in the second set, which resulted in a quick overall victory 6-2, 6-0 in less than an hour.
