Serena Williams' return to tennis at the Eastbourne International has raised questions about whether she intends to keep playing in 2023, but the American did not give a definitive answer when asked about her future.
Williams played two matches at the Eastbourne International with Ons Jabeur, defeating Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo in the opening round before beating Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-Ching in the quarterfinal.
Unfortunately, the pair withdrew from the tournament before their semifinal. Jabeur sustained a right knee injury in the first round and elected to rest it before Wimbledon begins next week.
Nonetheless, Williams's return to tennis after nearly 12 months out with a leg injury was still positive. Although her comeback has barely begun, her fans hope will hope she keeps playing until 2023.
Although the seven-time Wimbledon champion loves tennis, she could not guarantee that her return would continue beyond this year, saying her commitments off the court also excite her.
“I don’t know. I can’t answer that. I love tennis and I love playing, or else I wouldn’t be out here, right? But I also love what I do off the court, what I’ve built with Serena Ventures. It’s interesting, so it’s a lot."
Williams does not want to make big decisions about her future after her hard work returning to tennis. Encouragingly, the American said her body feels great after all her training to overcome her injury.
“I’m literally taking it one day at a time. I really took my time with my hamstring injury, so I’m just not making a ton of decisions after this. I would be dishonest if I said I wasn’t. Now, my body feels great. It’s doubles; I’m only playing half the court. I’ve been doing a lot of training, and it definitely feels good"
