Naomi Osaka was recently involved in a scary incident in New York, and it has led to the former world No. 1 sharing her thoughts about how repeated news of mass shootings have impacted her.
The four-time Grand Slam champion already attracts a lot of attention in the media for her performances on court. Her struggles this year have increased this, with her first round loss at the French Open being Osaka's most recent setback.
After returning to New York, Osaka was present during a terrible event at the Barclays Centre, in Brooklyn. A sound disturbance after a boxing match made people in the venue think that a shooter was present.
This led to a stampede, with ten people being injured as a result. Thankfully, Osaka got out without being physically harmed, but the incident certainly left her shaken.
That has been demonstrated by Osaka sharing her thoughts further on social media. The Japanese star said that repeated news of mass shootings means she is nervous when someone enters during a movie at a theater.
"I used to love going to the movies, now on rare occasions I do go I always feel my heart clench and my palms become sweaty every time I see a person enter a theatre while the movie is ongoing."
Osaka then made reference to the scary situation that she faced at the Barclays Center, saying that it is not something she wants anyone to go through.
"This feeling of familiarity towards these frequent devastating situations might be exclusive to people living in America but the emotions I experienced in those few minutes I was waiting in that room is something I wouldn't want anyone to go through."
The two-time Australian Open champion ended her post by saying that one particular trend made her cry, describing it as "insanity."
"I read an article the other day how bulletproof backpacks are selling more and more and that made me cry so hard. I cannot imagine a future if this continues, something has to evolve and hopefully it will be for the better because should not deemed normal. This is insanity."
