Beatriz Haddad Maia won't be competing at the 2023 Guadalajara Open, a WTA 1000 tournament, after a freak shower incident.
The Brazilian is one of the most talented players on the WTA Tour, and she's showing that in 2023. Ranked 18th in the WTA Rankings, Haddad Maia was one of the favourites to do well at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico.
As the ninth-seeded, the 27-year-old saw the draw for the 2023 Guadalajara Open pair her name with Danielle Collins, who would have been a really difficult first-round test for the Brazilian.
However, that match will not happen as Haddad Maia experienced a freak incident in the shower. The Brazilian posted an update on her social media account, explaining that as she was getting out of the shower on Sunday, the glass on the shower door broke and cut her body.
"Hey guys I hope everyone is doing well. Unfortunately this is a more "boring" post, but it is also part of it. Last night, Sunday, at the hotel, getting out of the shower and opening the shower box the door just popped and I ended up cutting some parts of my body off."
As a result, Haddad Maia had to visit hospital in Guadalajara to get stitches for the cuts, including both of her playing hands. Because of that, the 27-year-old will not be able to compete at the 2023 Guadalajara Open.
"I had to go to the hospital here in Guadalajara to get stitches (between them in both hands) and unfortunately I will not be able to play here in Mexico (special place for us tennis players due to all the responsiveness of the people and efforts of the tournaments)."
Ending her update on a positive note, Haddad Maia said that besides a minor scare and a few stitches, she's fine and ready to return to the tennis court once her wounds heal and allow her to do that.
"Besides the scare I'm fine It could be something much more serious. I will need a few days now to heal the wounds and be able to be back for the latter part of the year; and keep fighting for my goals for 2023. I appreciate the affection and good vibes from everyone. Have a nice week and see you soon."
