Coco Gauff had high hopes about returning to
Wimbledon, but the American player ran into a very inspired Sofia Kenin, who shattered the dream.
It was a competitive match for the most part, as Gauff produced a respectable effort,
but not good enough to secure a second-round spot on the grass courts in London.
Kenin rolled back the years, securing her biggest win in a very long time. It was a fabulous match from the more experienced American who has been attempting a comeback with some mixed results.
It's been a bit better lately, though.
Gauff herself didn't have the best preparation for the event, but hoped to have a good run after picking up some wins in Eastbourne. Ultimately, it didn't work out, and it's left her feeling very frustrated, which is understandable.
"I mean, it really wants [sic] me to work harder. Right now I'm very frustrated and disappointed. So, yeah, I think it makes me want to work even harder. I feel like I have been working hard, but clearly it's not enough."
"I have to go back to the drawing board and see where I need to improve and how to do the right drills to do that."
Gauff will now have some time to figure out what needs to change before the crucial US Open stretch. There will be about a month before the biggest events start again, and she'll get a chance to reset on home soil.
It will be interesting to see whether Gauff continues with coach
Pere Riba, who was hired for Wimbledon on a trial basis. The result ultimately wasn't very good, but her performance on the court was far from terrible. A lot of big choices are coming up for Gauff, whose season is not following the superb start.
