Eugenie Bouchard was in Cluj-Napoca this week for the 2022 Transylvania Open but had to retire from her most recent match.
Bouchard has been playing lots of tennis lately, hoping to find a decent level again. The Canadian might never reach the level she had as a teenager, but she’s very determined to at least try to achieve it.
To do that, she has played lots of tennis lately with some really solid outings. Her run in Chennai, in particular, stands out as a pretty solid one, as she made the quarter-final before losing to Nadia Podoroska.
At her best, Bouchard still has things to give to tennis, but her body seems to be lagging behind because oftentimes, after playing lots of tennis, she starts to struggle with some physical issues.
It’s been a huge problem for her for much of her career. It happened again in Romania, as she’s out of the WTA 250 event after only one match. She didn’t even finish it because she retired from it after the opening set.
Her opponent was Anhelina Kalinina, and the Ukrainian was able to win the opening set 6-3, after which the Canadian retired from the match. It’s not ideal for her because this has been a theme for her for a while.
Luckily, Bouchard admitted after the match that it wasn't anything serious, even though it is a hip problem that can be quite tricky to deal with.
"I tweaked my hip in practice on Saturday and tried everything to be ready for my match Tuesday. As the match went on, it got worse and my movement was affected. Out of caution, I felt like the right decision was to retire."
However, the doctors told her that she would be able to play in Guadalajara, which is coming up soon.
"The doctors have told me that with a few days of rest and treatment, I should be good to go in Guadalajara. I am so grateful to the entire team in Cluj for their hospitality this week."
