Elena Rybakina vs Victoria Azarenka: 2024 Berlin Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Elena Rybakina and Victoria Azarenka will meet in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Berlin Open, and only one will make it to the semi-final.

The Kazakhstani player started her grass season with a really strong showing, beating Veronika Kudermetova in two sets. Next up for her is Azarenka, who is both a good player overall and solid on grass.

Rybakina, herself, is very strong on grass, having won Wimbledon two years ago. She's certainly been playing at a really high level this year, even though great disappointments like the loss to Jasmine Paolini at the Roland Garros also tend to happen.

The quarter-final in Berlin is a match that's largely on Rybakina's racket because, so far, she's done really well against the Belarusian. She has the more powerful serve and better hitting, and she has just played better overall so far this season.

Head-to-head:

We have only seen four matches between them so far, and Rybakina won all of them. Two of those were played this year, and both were really competitive. The first meeting happened in Dubai, and Azarenka won the opening set, lost the second set, and then retired from the match.

Their second match this year was played at the Miami Open, and Rybakina won it as well, but it was once again a very competitive match that went to three sets. The world no. 4 generally wins this matchup, but the two matches we saw this year have been pretty close.

Prediction:

Things are complicated by the match being played on grass. The match, as always, is on Rybakina's racket, as she showed in her previous matches against the former world no. 1.

Prediction: Elena Rybakina to win in three sets.
