Iga Swiatek made it already to the third round of the 2023 Roland Garros after another convincing performance.
It's never easy to be a defending champion, and Iga Swiatek is the only defending champion at this year's Roland Garros in singles because men's champion, Rafael Nadal is not present in the French capital.
After beating Cristina Bucsa in the first round of the competition, the young Pole took on an opponent that she knows very well in the second round, Claire Liu. The two met at the Indian Wells this year, and it was a crushing victory for Swiatek then, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Many tennis fans would call the victory in a different terminology, a donut, and a breadstick, as terms to winning sets to 0 and to 1. But world no. 1 wants to leave that to fans and focuses only on her tennis.
She did that well against Liu, breaking her opponent twice in the first three games and seemingly setting the stage for another comfortable win. But this time, the American showed that she can also play good tennis and recovered both breaks in the first set.
Yet, Swiatek was the clear favourite in the match and she soon showed why. Breaking her opponent again, and this time confirming it with a hold, she did everything needed to win the first set 6-4 and already switched focus to the second set.
The second set already looked more like the previous meeting on the WTA Tour between the two. Swiatek dominated from start to finish, never allowing her opponent to get into the rhythm and winning 6-0 to seal the match and the third-round spot.
Despite 'bagling' her opponent, the Pole probably didn't even realize and now she fully focuses on the upcoming third-round clash against Xinyu Wang from China.
