Belinda Bencic won't compete at the 2023 Madrid Open and the 2023 Italian Open as an injury forced her to withdraw from the WTA 1000 events.

The reigning Olympic gold medalist has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming Madrid and Rome clay court tournaments due to a persistent hip injury. The world number 11 shared the news on social media, expressing her disappointment and determination to recover in time for the upcoming Roland Garros.

Bencic's withdrawal from these two major events and the decision to prioritize her health and recovery is crucial for the long-term success of her career. In her Instagram story, Bencic revealed that the hip discomfort had been an issue during the U.S. swing as well, necessitating a period of rest and recovery.

“I have some discomfort in my hip which I struggled with during the U.S. swing as well and need to take a little rest and recover to be back at 100% for Roland-Garros. I will miss both tournaments dearly but will be back in a few weeks and can’t wait to be back competing soon and continuing in great form.”

The Madrid Open and the Italian Open in Rome are key clay court events in the lead-up to the French Open, also known as Roland Garros. With her sights set on a strong performance in Paris, Bencic is committed to ensuring she is in top condition for the prestigious Grand Slam event.

While it's unfortunate that Bencic won't be competing in Madrid and Rome, her absence presents opportunities for other players to make their mark on the clay court season.
