Karolina Pliskova is the latest WTA player to criticize the WTA's decision to remove points from the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, but she still wants to compete.
Pliskova was a finalist in the women's singles event at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Czech player reached her first-ever final at the Championships last season, but she was unable to go one step further and win the title after losing to former world number one Ashleigh Barty.
Following her run to last year's Wimbledon final, Pliskova earned 1,300 WTA ranking points, while eventual winner Barty gained 2,000 points. However, these points will not be on offer to any competitors at the All England Club this season following the ATP and WTA's removal of points from the competition.
The tennis governing bodies decided on such action following WImbledon's ban on Russian and Belarusian players for the 2022 event. The All England Club event organizers enforced their decision in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
An ongoing public debate has been raging between male and female players over the ATP and WTA's points removal from Wimbledon this season, with split opinions on both sides.
While Pliskova firmly disagreed with the omission of points, she also said that she would compete in London for prestige and not for any other reason.
"I think it’s super tough and unfair and bad decision. But I suppose there’s not much you can do about it. I still want to go and compete there, that’s for sure, because I’m not playing because of the points, not even because of the money."
Ultimately, the allure of potentially winning a Grand Slam at Wimbledon may see the top players return to SW19 this season. Although, not all of the WTA's players are in agreement about appearing at Wimbledon as former world number one Naomi Osaka recently said the points removal may impact her decision.
Such considerations do not seem to motivate Pliskova, though. The Czech player reiterated that she was eager to return to Wimbledon in 2022 to try and launch another title challenge.
"I just, of course, I want to win and I want to succeed and I want to maybe get the trophy because I was quite close last year."
