Aryna Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva will battle it out for a final spot at the 2025 Brisbane International.

The way the 2025 Brisbane International draw shaped up, the semi-final match between these two players is a "little final" at this WTA 500 event, with all respect to the other two semi-finalists.

Qualifier Polina Kudermetova and Anhelina Kalinina never played in a WTA 500 final, and any of these two players that reaches the final will be an underdog against either of the two other semi-finalists.

Sabalenka is the top seed in Brisbane, and she doesn't need to be introduced. The WTA World No. 1 player started the new season in style, winning all of the matches without too many issues.

Andreeva obviously doesn't need to be introduced, either. The 17-year-old prodigy took the tennis world by storm, and she continues to prove her qualities also in 2025.

Like Sabalenka, she didn't lose a single set at the Brisbane International, and their recently built friendship will be put to the test in this semi-final meeting.

Sabalenka and Andreeva played together during the off-season, teaming up at the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi. The two played in doubles together at the team event, helping their team reach the final, which they eventually lost, despite Sabalenka winning her singles match and also triumphing with Andreeva in the doubles match in the final.

Now, they will stand on opposite sides of the court, and this match will prove to be a proper test for both, showing where they stand ahead of the new season.

Sabalenka's qualities don't have to be questioned, but the question is how much of a challenge Andreeva can prove to be for her. In the past, they met only on the hard courts, with the Belarusian player proving to be better.

First, she won at the 2023 Madrid Open, 6-3, 6-1, and she bested Andreeva at the same event also the following year, triumphing 6-1, 6-4.

However, at the 2024 Roland Garros, it was Andreeva who won. Still, there is one big asterisk next to that result, as the Belarusian player wasn't 100% healthy in that match and still lost only barely 7-6(5), 4-6, 4-6.

Andreeva is an incredible player, and there is no doubt that her Top 10 breakthrough is only a matter of time, and it wouldn't be crazy to even predict her reaching the World No. 1 rank in the upcoming seasons.

However, she is still vulnerable, and her game is far from complete. If she played against anyone else, the 17-year-old player would undoubtedly be the favorite, but her past meetings against Sabalenka showed that she still likely doesn't have the physicality needed to counter the biggest hitter on the WTA Tour.

At the same time, Andreeva massively improves with every passing day, and during the World Tennis League, she bested Elena Rybakina, who plays similarly to Sabalenka, 6-2.

Still, the teenager might not have enough to win this match, but it will certainly highlight how much she has improved since the last meeting with Sabalenka.
