Bianca Andreescu posted to her IG story that she’s en route back to Toronto to rest and get ready for her Tuesday night match at the National Bank Open. Six days away. #NBO22
Bianca Andreescu's first match of the North American hard court season did not go as planned, but the Canadian revealed that physical issues hampered her.
This is the time of the year when Andreescu thrives the most when her game is flowing. She won the Canadian Open and, most notably, the US Open during the same year in 2019.
Andreescu is usually most comfortable playing on hard courts. However, she did have an impressive run to the final of the Bad Homburg Open on grass in June, losing narrowly to Caroline Garcia.
Unfortunately for Andreescu and her fans, she was far below her best level against Shelby Rogers at the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, being comprehensively beaten 6-4, 6-2 by the home favorite.
Andreescu took a medical timeout during the match, but the 22-year-old chose to finish the contest. The day after her defeat, she posted on social media that she had discomfort in her back but hoped to be fit for her home tournament at the Canadian Open.
"Hi everyone ! Yesterday was a tough match for me in San Jose. I felt some discomfort in my back but I am now on my way to Toronto to rest a bit and to get ready to play next week on Tuesday night. Can't wait to see you all out there."
The former US Open champion seems confident about playing at next week's Canadian Open. Feeling she only needs to rest the injury rather than receive more serious treatment for the problem is a good sign.
Andreescu is a hero in Canada, and the local fans desperately hope she will be fit to play at her home tournament. There is always a special feeling when players get to compete in their countries in front of supportive crowds, generating great atmospheres.
