The 2024 Wimbledon Championships is expected to be one of the most unpredictable tournaments in the women's section, and the entry list has now been revealed.
The third Grand Slam of the year will run from July 1st to 14th, featuring a 128-player singles field in the main draw. The Venus Rosewater Dish has not been successfully defended at Wimbledon since 2016, when Serena Williams won the last of her seven singles titles.
With that said, Marketa Vondrousova will need to beat the odds for a second year in a row to triumph. The crafty Czech charted her way into the record books by becoming the first unseeded woman in the Open Era to win Wimbledon.
Vondrousova will return to the All-England Club in July to defend her crown. Iga Swiatek will most likely be World No. 1 at the tournament. Wimbledon is one of two majors the Pole has not won in her career. Her best result was reaching the quarterfinal last season.
Aryna Sabalenka faces a potential slide out of the top two from Coco Gauff, the immediate challenger to her seat. The young American wants to address last year's shocking loss to Sofia Kenin in the first round.
Elena Rybakina will undoubtedly be one of the favorites after a terrific first half of the season which yielded three WTA 500 titles. She won the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, her first and thus far only Grand Slam title.
Jessica Pegula has not crossed the quarterfinal barrier at the Grand Slam level on six occasions. Will it be lucky number seven for the Buffalo native? That remains a tricky question after a difficult start to 2024 for the experienced American.
Ons Jabeur has fallen short at the final hurdle in her quest to become the first African and Arab woman to win a major. She lost the 2022 final to Rybakina and suffered a tearful defeat to Vondrousova 12 months ago.
The Tunisian is not giving up on her dream and will try a third bite of the cherry in July. Maria Sakkari, Qinwen Zheng and Jelena Ostapenko also feature. Experienced names like Victoria Azarenka, Barbora Krejcikova, and Madison Keys will play.
Karolina Muchova has not played a single tournament all season but hopes to recover from wrist surgery and return to action at Wimbledon. Linda Noskova, Mirra Andreeva, and Brenda Fruhvirtova will be the most exciting teenage trio to watch at the tournament.
Nine players will enter the main draw with a special ranking. Two of them are former Top 10 players: 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu and Paula Badosa.
The Spaniard retired from her second-round match at last year's tournament because of a back injury. The 2024 Wimbledon women's singles entry list can be seen below.
